Try New Things When Reloading

As is often the case with newcomers, there is very little, if any, experimentation done when it comes to reloading. We are taught when starting to stick to the formula, only changing what you absolutely need to. And, given safety concerns, this is a good rule to live by, especially when starting out. However, as you progress and your knowledge increases, the act of reloading will soon become a bore if you aren’t constantly striving to become better. Experimentation, when done safely, is the only way you can fine-tune your reloading process.

Try different brands/manufacturers

It’s inevitable; as you begin reloading, you are sure to find a brand that you prefer more than others. Whether it’s the manufacture of your brass or the brand of your powder, you will develop favorites. Often this is the brand you first have interaction with, as it’s the one you become most familiar with.  Also, while one reloader may prefer a different brand, this doesn’t mean it will become your favorite. The key is to use different manufacturers until you find one that best suits your needs. This could mean anything from trying brass with a different head stamp to switching the provider of your primers. Performing small changes like this, while keeping detailed notes, allows you to become the best reloader you can be.

Keep Notes!

That leads us to our next topic; always keep notes for your load. These notes should include the brand/manufacturer of each material used as well as any other changes in your process. Then, when you are at the range, keep track of each load’s performance. Doing so will help you pinpoint which changes to make in the next batch.

Build on other’s work

Reloading is one area in life where cheating off somebody else’s work is encouraged. The reloading community is like one large family. Because of these, most in it are more than willing to share and compare their notes/loads with you. This can be in the form of online forums/sites like this or even by finding other reloaders in your area who wouldn’t mind you picking their brain. Not only will this allow you to broaden your horizons but will keep you safe and informed while you experiment.

Have Fun!

There’s no doubt that reloading can be one of the most stressful past times around. This is especially the case with newcomers. From the stress of getting the right pressures to fine tuning the equipment and process, it’s easy to get lost in the detail and lose out on the fun. Once you have safely process a few loads, you should begin to feel comfortable enough with the process to begin making changes and fine-tuning. This is where the fun begins. You can switch from hand-loading to bulk-loading, allowing you the ability to create special rounds and then test them at the range. Though it can get complicated, there’s nothing more fun than firing your own special ammo at the range.

There’s will always be those who frown upon using the term “experimenting” in regard to reloading. However, when you get down to the brass tax, that’s all we are really doing. Just remember, the key to anything in the reloading world is doing so safely and wisely. Don’t let the need for fun surpass the need to stay safe.
